Gobbling Up Some Great Reads

Happy Turkey Day!

Are you getting excited for the holidays? At Kidsreads.com we love the holidays! To get yourself in the mood, be sure to check out our annual roundup of winter reads that you'll want to curl up with. We have also come up with a list of some great books that you might want to put on your holiday wish list. Remember, grownups always feel great about getting you books. You can see those titles in our What to Give/What to Get Guide here.

I’m looking at a weather map of the United States, and half of it shows temperatures that are colder than I might like. Yes, it seems winter is here already. The changing weather reminds me of all the holiday shopping I have to do. These days, I do most of it online. Not surprisingly, I get books for a lot of my friends and family. There are so many reasons books make super gifts. At Kidsreads.com we’ve come up with 45 (and I bet you can think of even more).

This month’s lineup contains lots of thought-provoking fiction. CHAINS by Laurie Halse Anderson, which was a finalist for this year’s National Book Award, follows the story of Isabel, a black girl trying to win her freedom during the American Revolution. In EVERY SOUL A STAR, three teens share a life-changing summer at camp. Ally, Bree and Jack couldn’t be more different, but somehow a solar eclipse draws them together. Wendy Mass is a wonderful award-winning author, and her latest book is truly a treat. WAYS TO LIVE FOREVER by Sally Nicholls is told from the point of view of an 11-year old boy who is dying from leukemia. As he comes to grips with his disease, he comes up with lists of things he wants to accomplish before he dies. Grab your tissues --- this book is a tear-jerker.

Several of our favorite series have new additions this month.

Brian Jacques has added a new adventure in his Redwall series with DOOMWYTE, another wonderful tale set in the fantastical
kingdom of Redwall, filled with fascinating furry friends.

In SAMMY KEYES AND THE COLD HARD CASH by Wendelin Van Draanen, a mysterious old man on his deathbed tells Sammy to get rid of all his cash. Would you do it? Sammy doesn’t, and she ends up in the middle of a dangerous plot. You’ll have lots of fun reading this funny and suspenseful book about your favorite intrepid detective. I got to see Wendelin last weekend when I was at a convention. She talked about how she enjoys writing books that make kids laugh; she was on a panel about writing humorous books. She also confessed that she makes herself laugh when she's writing them. Making yourself laugh would be a pretty nice way to earn a living.

GHOSTSITTERS is the fifth book in Angie Sage’s Araminta Spookie series. This time, Aunt Tabby and Uncle Drac head out of town, leaving Araminta’s cousin Mathilda in charge. This seems like the beginning of a great time, but Mathilda brings along two teenage ghosts determined to stir up trouble.

Last but not least, Geronimo Stilton is back. In A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, he's planned the perfect Christmas dinner. I’m guessing there's a lot of cheese involved. What happens when his grandfather announces they won’t be eating it because they’ll all be spending the holiday in New York? You’ll have to read to find out!

For more great reading suggestions, check out our Cool New Books and New in Paperback roundups for November and December (we combined them this month), as well as our most recent reviews.

I just saw that the new movie trailers for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are online. Check them out here and brush up on all things Harry at Harry Potter Central as you look forward to the film's July 17th release.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving with lots of turkey, mashed potatoes and books. Remember, if you ask for books, we can just about guarantee you will get presents and make the grownups happy!
