Biography

Kelly Barnhill

From Kelly's website:

My name is Kelly Barnhill, and I write books. I am a former teacher, former bartender, former waitress, former activist, former park ranger, former wildland firefighter, former secretary, former janitor and former church-guitar-player. The sum of these experiences have prepared me for exactly nothing – save for the telling of stories, which I have been doing quite happily for some time now.

I am the author of the novels IRON HEARTED VIOLET and THE MOSTLY TRUE STORY OF JACK, as well as a bunch of nonfiction books for the schools and libraries market and a gaggle of short stories in some cool magazines that you should totally read.  There’s also a new book, called THE WITCH’S BOY. It comes out in the fall of 2014.

I have three completely fabulous children, an astonishingly talented husband (his name is Ted Barnhill and he designs beautiful and sustainable houses – including the one I now live in – and he rules), and a very, very, very old dog. I also teach, freelance, corral Cub Scouts, run, canoe, camp, garden, and hike into the wilderness for days and days. I also bake pie. It’s a pretty good life, actually.

I am happily represented by Steven Malk of Writers House, who, it must be said, is a heck of a fellow.

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule --- but Xan is far away.

Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being --- called the Nybbas --- imprisoned in their world. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph...or its demise.

When Jack is sent to Hazelwood, Iowa, to live with his strange aunt and uncle, he expects a summer of boredom. Little does he know that the people of Hazelwood have been waiting for him for quite a long time. When he arrives, three astonishing things happen: First, he makes friends --- not imaginary friends but actual friends. Second, he is beaten up by the town bully; the bullies at home always ignored him. Third, the richest man in town begins to plot Jack's imminent, and hopefully painful, demise. It's up to Jack to figure out why suddenly everyone cares so much about him.
