A
NOTE FROM BOOKER
Hello!
It is almost
time to celebrate the birthday of one of the most popular authors
of all time...Dr. Seuss! He was born on March
2nd, 1904 and died in 1991. He would be turning 97 years old this
March. Dr. Seuss is one of the favorite authors of the worm kids
here in BOOKWORM. In fact, we are planning on a huge citywide celebration
to honor his birthday. We are going to have a picnic in the park,
and all the bookworms are invited. We will have a luncheon of green
eggs and ham. Everyone is going to get a white and red striped Dr.
Seuss hat made by my good friend, Rita Book.
Each class
at the school has chosen one of his books to read and make up a
play about. After the luncheon, the classes will present their plays
on the stage in the park. My niece's class has chosen to do HORTON
HEARS A WHO. My sister has made all the costumes for the kids to
wear. My next door neighbor, Rapid Reader, is going to be Horton.
Once all the plays are done, everyone will be invited to join in
a costume parade down Main Street. All the citizens of BOOKWORM
are encouraged to come to the celebration in a costume of one of
the characters in a Dr. Seuss book. I am planning on dressing up
as the yellow, fuzzy Lorax. Fay Belle is making my costume for me,
too.
As you can
tell, we are planning a great day to honor Dr. Seuss. And we are
not the only ones planning a special celebration. March 2nd is also
the fourth annual celebration of Read Across America .This year's
Read Across America theme is "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" --- you
know how many places books can take you!
Is your school
making any plans to celebrate? I'd love to hear about them. I can
share some of the events with others here in the newsletter. Please
write to me at bookertworm@aol.com.
Now, on to
more news for this week...

My City
My city is small.
It's very far away
I can see in my mind,
A place with no time.
I make perfect people,
To live in my city.
They never fight,
They never cry,
They're perfect.
They're boring.
I throw them all away.
I make people just like me now.
They fight, they cry,
And they make cities too.
I see their cities,
That are just like mine.
I start to cry.
There's no such thing as a perfect city.
The perfect city is a city of dreams.

I just finished reading a very good American Girl Book about Josefina.
I liked it sooooooooooooooooo much that I'm writing a sequel to
it even though it already has a bunch. I suggest that you read it
Booker Text! And also I wanted to tell you that you have an awesome
website and newsletter. You were REALLY creative to think up all
this! I just don't know how you do it!!!! You know Booker, when
I was 8, I used to read all the time with my Aunt Martha. But one
day, she suggested a book to me called Encyclopeidia Brown and I
absolutly HATED it! So I totally gave up on reading! Then one day
she said to my uncle, "Would you look in the bookstore when you
go out for a book called, Harry Potter?" I thought nope! I'm never
reading for fun again! but then my friend Anne, TOTALLY changed
that! She told me about a book called NANCY DREW. I took 1 look
at it and was addicted! (now, all you kids are thinking out there,
NANCY DREW was that freakishly lame-o book that was from like, times
of the Great Depression!) Well so what if it is! If you hate reading
and you're a girl, trust me --- read a NANCY DREW book. Then read
a Harry Potter book. Then, read an American Girl book and you'll
be completely hooked to books! TAKE MY ADVICE! C*= u wont regret
it!!!! Note from Booker: There's lots of info about Josefina and
the rest of the American Girls
here on Kidsreads.com.

I am reading an excellent book called "Bud, Not Buddy" I borrowed
it from my teacher. I am very excited about reading more of it.
It is about a boy named Bud, not Buddy. When he was at the age of
six, his mother died, I have yet to find out about his father. Anyways,
Bud gets sent to a "HOME" the Home helps Bud find families to live
with. So far Bid has went to live with the Amoes, I will let you
get the book to read to find out the rest. Note from Booker: Did
you know that BUD, NOT BUDDY won the Newbery Award for the year
2000? The Newbery Award is given by the American Library Association
to the book they think is the best book of the year for kids. To
read more about BUD, NOT BUDDY and to see the book's cover, click here. For a biography
of the author, Christopher Paul Curtis, click here.
You can find other award winning books in our Award Winners feature

and it's a really good book. It's named "Where the Red Fern Grows".
It's about a boy who wants two good hunting dogs. A funny part is
the boy's cat, Sammy. He kept on getting caught in the boy's traps
and yet, hasn't learned it's lesson. Well, now he has his dogs,
and he's got a coon skin to train them. Well, I hope you find that
book! It's great!!!!

Our favorite author is Tamela Fleetwood. She is the author and illustrator
of Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well. She has also written music to
go with her book. She had a fun book signing/sing-along/dance party
at Barnes & Noble on Hilton Head. I am an elementary school teacher
and I use Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well to teach young children
about living in harmony. The book (set in the year 21,340) has an
anti-prejudice theme. The illustrations are wonderfully whimsical
and the story has a lovely rhyme & rhythm. My students love it.
I read the story to my baby and to my niece & nephew. They are big
Nellie fans.
