A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

I begin this newsletter with a history lesson about Kidsreads.com. I am not sure how many of you know that Kidsreads.com was founded in July 1998. When the site first launched I did not have a name! Our first contest was for you to name me --- Booker T Worm. For those of you who are curious, the "T" stands for text.

We have a really cool CONTEST going on RIGHT NOW at kidsreads.com where once again you get to name a pet, but this time the winner will have the name they select for the pet used in a book, SARAH'S PAGE 2, which will be published later this year. How cool is that? AND the winner also will get a Handspring Visor, valued at $169! And a book signed by the author.  Other winners will get signed books. So, write us and let us know what you would name a DOG or HORSE character in the book. In book one, the lead dog character is called Ellie and the lead horse is Grand Traverse Bay.  What will happen in Sarah's Page II with an un-named horse and dog?? The winner will be selected by the author Anna Murray. Click here to read all the details of the contest.

We used to update KidsReads.com with new reviews and information for you on Fridays, but we now update the site on Wednesdays. As a result, submissions for the Mailbag are now due by Noon on Mondays.

Speaking of submissions... did you know that the more people we have subscribed to the newsletter, the more cool stuff that we can bring to you on kidsreads.com? My New Year's resolution is to get as many people as I can reading our newsletter. Do you think you can help me keep my resolution? How many people do YOU think you can get to sign up for it? We want so much to be the best site for YOU, our readers, but we need your help to do that. Tell your friends if they want to sign up, to send an e-mail to newsletter@kidsreads.com.

Now for this week's news...

--Booker T. Worm

Question of the Week
Here's this week's Question of the Week:

What books would you read to cheer up if you were stuck in bed with a cold?

Send your answer to YouSaid@kidsreads.com. Write "Question" in the subject line. We'll post your answers online! Tell your friends to submit their answer to the question of the week.

Sarah's Page
Want a great book to read online, or print it out and read at your leisure? Then have you started reading Sarah's Page yet? Section Four is now up and ready to read! In case you missed out on the previous chapters, I've listed them below. Don't forget to enter the Sarah's Page Contest, either!!
Section One
Section Two
Section Three

Author Interview!
Don't miss kidsreads.com's interview with Darren Shan, author of the spinetingling CIRQUE DU FREAK series. Find out why he is so fascinated with vampires and giving himself nightmares, and why he uses a freak show in his stories.

Sarah, Plain and Tall Series
SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL begins the story of a family living on the vast prairie in the early years of the 20th century. A small jewel of prose written with the beauty and rhythm of poetry, the book became the first in a trio of simple tales about love, loyalty, loneliness, and family. SKYLARK and CALEB'S STORY complete the series.

BOOK REVIEWS:

THE ADVENTURES OF ERASMUS TWIDDLE
A collection of fourteen short mysteries, THE ADVENTURES OF ERASMUS TWIDDLE is a good book to take along to read when you have a little time in your jammed packed social schedule. When your Mom is late picking you up from soccer practice or she drags you to the supermarket and all the lines are rrreeeaaallllllyyyy long. The stories themselves are chock full with character with names like Bagley Butterbottom (AKA Andrew Michaels) Erasmus's friend and sidekick---that is when he isn't too busy being a pirate.

OF MICE AND NUTCRACKERS
In this sequel to THE WAY TO SCHENECTADY, Jane Peeler, 13, writes clever, funny poems to put to the music of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky. His music and her poems make a great play and her class at school is performing Jane's work at their Winter Concert. Jane is the director, since she dreamed up the whole thing. Plus, she's bossy enough to tell everybody what to do and smart enough to know how things should be. But, as she discovers, that isn't all there is to directing. You will have to read OF MICE AND NUTCRACKERS to find out if the play goes on.

We Asked, You Said

IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY

It seems like only yesterday
I was called into existence
To answer the challenge of destiny
Across a faraway distance

It seems like only yesterday
I enunciated my first words
I smile at the distant memory

It seems like only yesterday
I discovered the magic of music
I smile at the distant memory

It seems like only yesterday
I visited my faraway relatives
I smile at the distant memory

Seasons fluttering by
The land is now covered with snow
Does time truly fly?

Across the galaxy of time
From December to March to May
The seconds are ticking away
It seems like only yesterday

*****

Just hold on before you judge me
Take a look at what you see
Don't look on the outside
To see who I can be

You see me read a book
That doesn't mean I'm a bookworm
You see me play a sport
That doesn't mean I'm out to learn

You think you know me but really
You're only looking on the outside
But when you look on the inside
You can see past your foolish pride

I once knew a girl named Sue
Who said she couldn't read
so I gave her this newsletter
Now shes better then me!

Eulaliaaaaa! This awesome war cry suits the ferocity, plot, and action of the awesome book: Lord Brocktree by Brian Jacques. Lord Brocktree is actually the first book everyone should read in the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. Of course, it's not the first book Mr. Jacques has written, but it's the first book in the chronological series. This is strictly advised for people who like to "have their ducks in a row."
So the book's strengths? Excellent action, amazing details that build the plot and lead to the climax, and cute/hilarious/downright evil/friendly/calm/strategic creatures that make up the world of Redwall. Above all, the book has an EXCELLENT atmosphere/mood of doom, death, friendship, rivalry, and suspense.
The book's weaknesses? The end went a bit quickly and didn't prove to have as good a climax as a reader should have expected after all the plot details before. Indeed, it was almost as if Mr. Jacques was hurrying to finish the book by a certain deadline. Anyway, that's why I gave the book 4 stars; it's the only weakness I could find.
To conclude, Lord Brocktree is definitely a book YOU should read today if you're a fan of fantasy and/or you have a fondness for animals. EULALIAAAAA...what are you waiting for?!?

i read the book The Golden Compass and really liked it. It is hard to understand unless you r smart.

*****

I would suggest To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee if you want to read a funny, historical, dramatic, creative book. It follows the story of Jem(11), Scout(6), and their father, Aticcus, for about three years. I read constantly, and this is the best book I've ever read.
I would also suggest A Painted House by John Grisham. This book tells a story in 50's rural Arkansas through the eyes of a seven-year-old boy. It's my second favorite book, behind To Kill A Mockingbird.

Dear Booker and Fellow bookworms,
To the person who likes to read a lot. I luv to read! U R not the only one!
Does anyone know where I can get a preview of the book There's A Boy in The Girl's Bathroom?  I heard it's really good!

*****

I really enjoy your newsletter.  I think it is really cool how you let us read a book (Sarah's Page) over the computer.  It is a lot cooler than having to spend like $10-$20 or more for books. I also like how at Kidsreads you can look at interviews, books, and what other kids think about 1 book or a whole bunch of books.

*****

I think everyone should read:
Atermis Fowl; Little Woman; Dove Song; Ballet Shoes; The Hobbit; The Painted Garden; The Secret Garden; Matilda; She, The Adventuress; Anne Of Green Gables; The Girls In The Velvet Frame; The BFG

And heaps more, but I would take up pages if I listed them all. They are  mostly the kind of books a girl would read.

*****

Some series of book I enjoy that you don't have on your site are the American Girl Wild At Heart books.  The books are about a group of kids that work at their Grandmothers Veternain Clinc and they rescue animals and make them healthy.  I sugest them!

*****

My favorite series that you don't have on your website is, The Abby Hayes Series By Anne Mazer.  They are about a girl who is 11 and goes on tons of fun filled adventures.  I suggest you read these books!
