A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

Last week was not a lucky week for me. It seems like something went wrong every day. Have you ever had a day like that? On Monday, my tree in the front yard had a big branch drop off in a storm. It didn't damage anything, but it made a mess for me to clean up. On Tuesday, my favorite pair of slippers got chewed up by my dog named Dog-Eared. On Wednesday, I tried to bake a pie, and I forgot it was in the oven. It burned right up, and made the whole house smell bad. No wonder FayeBelle, my sister, tells me never to try baking! On Thursday, my bicycle had a flat tire, just when I wanted to ride to the library to get more books to read. On Friday, I caught a cold, and I didn't feel well all day.  I must have sneezed a thousand times! On Saturday, I was almost afraid to get out of bed. Just when I went to settle down to read a book by the fire, I saw that I was all out of firewood. I had to go out in the cold to chop some from the fallen tree branch. What a week!

When I told my friend Book Mark about all my bad luck, he said I sounded like I could have a book written about me like the ones in the Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snicket. That is a series of books about a family who has all kinds of bad luck over and over. I have read the books, and I told Book Mark he was right! I did feel like the family in the series.

We have a great page featuring A Series of Unfortunate Events, and it has several links off of it to a web site on the books, a word scramble, information on the author, and some neat information on the characters. The series is for readers ages 10 and up, and I bet you will love them all, like me.

Remember to click on the blue underlined letters to go to any feature listed in the newsletter.

Now for this week's news...

--Booker T. Worm

Our Canadian Girls Series
The OUR CANADIAN GIRLS series tell the stories of four extraordinary girls living in extraordinary times.  Through the eyes of Rachel, Marie-Claire, Penelope, and Emily you can learn a few things about Canada's history. The girls themselves may be fictional, but the events that they live through are not!

Newberry/Caldecott Winners
Since 1921, the American Library Association (otherwise known as the ALA) has been giving awards to the best children's books each year. These awards are called the Newbery, Caldecott and King awards. One book receives the John Newbery Medal, and runners up may be named Newbery Honor Books. One illustrated book is awarded the Randolph Caldecott Medal, with other cool picture books named Caldecott Honor titles. No one really knows who will win each year. Committee members are sworn to secrecy, until the announcement is made at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January!

Well, the Midwinter meeting is over and The American Library Association has announced its 2002 awards. We've got them all for you right here!

BOOK REVIEWS:

A PIECE OF THE WORLD by by Mildred Walker
12-year-old Calder is sent to live with her Grandmother in Weldon, Vermont because Calder's mother needs time to herself. Calder's mother and father have just gotten a divorce.

While exploring Weldon, Calder discovers a giant boulder that she later learns is actually a serpentine boulder, which broke off from a giant glacier hundreds of thousands of years ago. Will Calder and her friends save the rock from a rich man who wants to buy it, and from the Weldon Development Society, who want to turn the area into a tourist attraction? You'll have to read A PIECE OF THE WORLD to find out!

FLIPPED by Wendelin Van Draanen
Author Wendelin Van Draanen has taken a break from her Sammy Keyes series to bring us FLIPPED. FLIPPED is a story about a girl named Juli who likes a boy named Bryce. Bryce doesn't have any interest in Juli until the 8th grade, when he finally notices her. By that time, Juli isn't interested in Bryce anymore. We think you'll enjoy the eighth-grade "he-said, she-said" romance told in alternating chapters by two teens who describe how their feelings change about themselves and each other.

By My Side

Brush of the wind
Against the trees
    swaying
Alongside the tall,
Towering trunks of a magic
Wonder, it seems.

So simple, yet so rich.
In beauty, in sculpture
A gifted artist,
Precious and detailed.

Thoughts of silent nature days.
Yet a silence, not so true.
To wash away anticipation, confusion,
A silence, like no other.

An auburn leaf sways to the ground.
A gentle rocking horse, falling.
Twirling.
And landing swiftly, by my side.

*****

The Horse Race
      Through the wind we glide,
My horse down at my side,
      Running at our pace,
           3,2,1, we won 1st place!

I think you need to write a review about the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. They are the best books I have ever read

*****

Hi, Booker. I absolutely love your newsletter. To the readers: no one answered my call about Harry Potter. I said, that if you liked Harry Potter Books, better than the movie to write Booker in the mailbag and say: HP-I agree. Y did no 1 answer?

From Booker T Worm: Actually we did get a lot of responses to your question. So many that I couldn't fit them in the newsletter! The overwhelming answer was that readers prefer the Harry Potter book over the movie. Why? Because the book is a lot longer and has many more details than the movie. Although almost everyone we heard from liked the movie, very few liked it better than the book.

*****

I love crafts! I usually do interior decorating for a local newspaper. I make anything. I hate art though. That's painting and drawing. Two things i special in are making collages, and interior decorating.

First of all, I'm a great fan of Brain Jacques. the Redwall seires rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read all of them and love 'em! I think everyone sould try them!

*****

In the last newsletter,a couple of people mentioned the R.L. Stine books.I like them, but they are a little below my reading level. Okay, they are a lot.But I read them for "ligh reading" and I do it at night with my nightlight.I only use a nightlight to read-when I am finished reading I shut it off.Aren't I smart? I was the person in the last newsletter who mentioned I was happy that someone mentioned Lemony Snicket's real name was Daniel Handler. The teacher is going to start reading the second book.....I think it's name is Reptile Room.Every morning,my teacher gathers us in the "reading corner" where we have bean bags and crates with cushions,at rickety bench, and the rug to sit on.She reads us one or two chapters from the books she is reading to us.I always look foward to that time of the day! Someone mentioned Where the Red Fern Grows.   That is my teacher's favorite book.I want to read it,but I am currently reading....what,how many books? Like 4 books at one time. She said it is sad,but it is still her favorite.Sixth Grade Star sounds really interesting, thanks for someone mentioning that.I may read it some day when I have time.I have one recemondation to make........

I think anyone that is the age of 11-14 should read the Madeline L'Engle books. If your 11 you should only read them if you have a special talent for reading. Her books that are very good are A Wrinkle In Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planets,Many Waters.... I truthfully don't remember the rest. But there are about 4 or 5 books, and there will be a movie for A Wrinkle In Time on time soon.
That's all fellow readers!

*****

Hey Booker T. Worm! I LOVEEE your site and think it is the best. I am currently reading "Stolen by the Sea" by Anna Myers. I first found out about the book from your website and it is a great book so far. I recommend it for people ages 8-13. Another pretty good book (recommended for 7-10) is "Wizards Don't Use Computers" and it is part of the Bailey School Kids books. You may find that book a little too easy if your my age, 11 or older though. Another great book i've read was "Sixth Grade Star" by Constance Hiser. This book is about a girl in the 6th grade named Jill who has a little sister, Jessica that always enters all these contests and pageants and wins. Jill is sorta jealous of her and she wants to be a star too. When Jill enters the 6th grade play for The Wizard of Oz, that play is on the same day as one of Jessica's pageants. Will Jill's mom and her sister be there to see her or not? Read the book to find out!

*****

There are a lot of books that I am currently reading, and I suggest that you read these books: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Wind in the
Willows by Kenneth Grahame. These are both classics, and I knew they were great because both the characters and plots are well-made by the time I was in the
middle of reading them.

I also recommend the Harry Potter series and schoolbooks (Quidditch through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and where to find them.), Sweet Valley series (mind you, this is my largest collection. I have SV High, SV twins and more) Goosebumps, The Unicorn Club, and all the Baby-Sitters Club books.

I also have inspirational books such as Stories for the Teen's Heart books 1 and 2, Stories for the Extreme Teen's heart, Chocolate for the Teen's Heart, Chicken Soup for the Teen's soul, Journal for a Teen's Heart books 1 and 2, Diary of a Teenage girl and its sequel, It's My Life. They have stories that can inspire, touch and warm your heart.

And by these, you know that I am a bookworm don't you? I am one, and when I finished important tasks in my free time, you'll find me in my bedroom reading books, writing stories or reading magazines such as Questor, Seventeen, Chalk, Star Studio and Candy when I'm not surfing the Internet.

*****

I think you should post Pre-Teen Is In Between I think it's a great book for all pre-teen girls.

Dear Booker Worm T & Fellow Bookworm Readers,
Wow, I haven't sent in a letter in a while! I have a few books to talk about that were mentioned in the last newsletter. Firstly, this is not about reading, but I like the little gator joke! It was very cute. Second, I want to say something about the Redwall series. I don't find them very interesting, and I am an excellent reader and I'm not very fussy. I think the Redwall books are for boys more then the girls. Our teacher was reading the first Redwall book to us, and we girls thought it was pretty boring, but the boys all loved it and now you see them all with Redwall books! Third, a person mentioned the Series of Unfortunate Events. Currently, our teacher is reading the first book as a read aloud. I've wanted to read them and when I saw the book, I was so happy! My teacher had told us that she didn't think Lemony Snicket WAS his real name. We have all been wondering about that question!! Thanks for whomever said it was Daniel Handler-I can't wait to tell my teacher!! Now I've got some book suggestions to make.....

Have you ever read the books of Mysteries In Our National Parks? I have 2 books, and there are many of them, but you don't have to read them in order. They are mystery, and the characters are fake, but the parks they mention are real. The two I have are CliffHanger and The Hunted. They cost 5.95 each, and in Canada, they cost 8.50. I highly reccomend these books! Also, Nancy Drew is great to read if your into mystery a lot like I am.

*****

These are some of my favorite books:
1. Secret Garden by Frances Hodedegeson Burnett
2. Matilda by Roald Dahl
3. Saddle Club by Bonnie Bryant= Any girl who LOVES Horses will  LOVE this Series!!!
4. Bridge to Terebithia
5. A Jar of Dreams by Yoshiko Uchida
from a Fifth Grade READer

*****

Do you know Ben M. Baglio I love his book called Fox In The Frost. I would love to tell him that he could make a movie out of it i cried for an hour after reading it.

*****

I have made a list of all the BEST books ever.  (in my opinion, anyway!)
1. All 4 Harry Potter Books-J.K. Rowling
2. The Face on the Milk Carton-Caroline B. Cooney
3. Anything else except The Terrosrist and Flashfire by Caroline B Cooney, ESPECIALLY the "Tme" quartet. It's just the right mixture of suspense, action, romance, and mystery! There's Both Sides of Time, Out of Time, 1 I can't remember, and For all Time.
4. Ella Enchanted-Gail Carson Levine
**Also-- I'm ordering the Princess Set of books by Gail Carson Levine... they're going to be AWESOME!!!**
So basically, the three BEST AUTHORS EVER ARE JK ROWLING, CAROLINE B COONEY, AND GAIL CARSON LEVINE.
-Future Author

I read the book "Tangerine" written by Edward Bloor. It was a great book because it makes you think about what's going on, and it makes you want to read more! I hope you read it!

*****

I have only just recently become a fan for harry potter and read all four books during the christmas holidays, one after the other.  The error you have already mentioned about Lily and James appearing out of the wand had been corrected in the version I read, but I did pick up another major error concerning Dobby, has anyone else picked this up?  If not, I shall write to the publishers and point it out.
