Life on the Jemison farm in eastern Pennsylvania was pretty peaceful most of the time. But in 1758, 12-year-old Mary Jemison and her family were captured by Seneca warriors. Mary was separated from her siblings and parents and was brought along with the tribe as they traveled from place to place. Though she longed to get back to her family, Mary soon adapted to the Seneca ways. The Indians showed Mary kindness by taking care of her and teaching her about the earth and its creatures.
