Mariel, the daughter of Joseph the Bellmaker, is the first female
to star in a Redwall novel and she makes her debut in this fourth
volume in the series.
Gabool the Wild, a vicious sea pirate rat, takes Joseph and Mariel
captive on his ship. Threatened by Mariel's unrelenting spirit, he
throws her overboard and leaves her for dead. But the tenacious little
mousemaid survives and joins forces with a proud band of Redwall do-gooders
to even the score. With help from Dandin, a mouse descendent of Martin
the Warrior; Tarquin, a hare of the Long Patrol, and a brave hedgehog
called Durry Quill, Mariel fights toads, needle-beaked herons and
evil weasels to get to Gabool.
Once reunited with her father and teamed with the heroic badger, Rawnblade,
Mariel uses her resourcefulness --- and her handmade weapon, the Gullwhacker
--- to bring Gabool down. She then marries Dandin and returns to peaceful
Redwall Abbey.
