Twelve-year-old Kendall, who is half Anglo and half Acoma Indian, feels special --- almost magical --- when he runs. And in the summer after his mother dies he begins to find out what he's running toward. At first he had expected to spend the summer with his father, a truck driver. But then a letter from his estranged Native American grandfather arrives and Kendall is invited to Acoma, The Land of Enchantment, an ancient settlement in New Mexico. He hopes that he'll find the answers to questions about his mother and his Native American heritage while he's there.
