Amir wants to like his new foster parents, The Smiths --- they are a truly loving couple. But he feels like he can't connect with them and so he spends his time writing to Doris, his best friend who lives in his old neighborhood. When Doris gives Amir some disappointing news, he must find a way to deal with his family's past and find a place for himself.
