VICTORIA, May Blossom of Britannia; England, 1829
(The Royal Diaries)

by Anna Kirwan
Scholastic
ISBN: 0439215986
Ages 9-12
224 pages

At the age of ten, Princess Victoria should have been content to play with dolls, have tea parties and enjoy the many advantages that her wealthy family could provide. But instead Victoria had a wisdom beyond her years, and saw herself as a prisoner in her own home --- unable to have any privacy and unable to voice her feelings about it. When she discovers an old ledger in the stables she turns it into a diary, and through her writings we are able to see what daily life in the royal household was like. Victoria's secret wishes and devilish stories are often punctuated with humor, poking fun at various family members. At other times she takes a more serious tone. Victoria is also extremely smart, which eventually leads to a discovery that some members of the royal family had been trying to hide. Victoria pieces together their family tree and is shocked to find that she is in line to be the next Queen of England!

We know you'll enjoy reading this account of Victoria's life and how she came to be the longest reigning Queen of England. The historical notes, including a copy of the infamous family tree, are included along with photos of the Queen and her court.
