One morning, in the French countryside, sisters Marcelle and Coco are on an expedition to gather mushrooms in order to feed their family's pig. They make a surprising discovery in the nearby forest: a young English soldier, blinded by war, has sought refuge in the trees.

Lieutenant Shepard has been trying to get back home across the Channel to his family, particularly to his younger brother John who is very sick. The two little girls agree to keep the soldier a secret, and decide to help him by bringing him food and figuring out a way for him to get home. In return, the soldier tells them wonderful stories that are all inspired by a tiny silver donkey figurine --- a treasured keepsake given to him by his brother.

The four stories are all legends featuring a brave, loyal donkey. From the familiar story of Bethlehem to the soldier's own personal story, these tales are told in an eloquent yet simple way. For children, they are a treat with a moral message. For Lieutenant Shepard, they are a brief escape from the nightmares that haunt him since he walked away from the trenches, as well as a gentle reminder of the brother he hopes to see again soon.

Although set during World War I, THE SILVER DONKEY transcends time and can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It is a tale of friendship, bravery and hope from a wonderful writer.
