MAIRELON THE MAGICIAN
by Patricia C. Wrede
Tom Doherty Associates
ISBN: 0765342324
Ages 9-12
288 pages

In London, England 16-year-old Kim has been living on the streets, working the markets and going on missions for strangers, stealing to try and survive ever since her guardian got sent to prison. So she doesn't hesitate when a stranger offers her some money to break into a traveling magician's wagon in search of a silver bowl. When Mairelon, the traveling magician, catches her in his wagon he asks her to join him and his assistant, Hunch, as an apprentice. Kim accepts the offer, and her new journey begins.

When they leave London, Mairelon starts giving Kim reading, language, and magic lessons. Along the way they meet Earl Shoreham who tells Mairelon about three members of the Sons of Dawn, a group who really believes in magic, and the Saltash Platter and the spheres they have. According to his story, they hold the key to an interesting spell when combined with the Saltash Bowl. Shoreham believes they are in Ranton Hill, so Mairelon, Hunch and Kim head in that direction.

One night while camping in the woods, they follow a coach and secretly observe a meeting of the Sons of Dawn. They learn that Henry Bramingham, the son of Charles Bramingham and Harriet St. Clair Bramingham, now has the Saltash Platter, and is going to give it to his uncle, St. Clair. Mairelon tells Hunch to go back to London and find out more information about them. Then they go to the Bramingham place.

When they arrive they find the Saltash Platter, but there's just one problem: it's a fake copy of the real thing! In fact, they discover there are several fake platters. Will they be able to find the real Saltash Platter? Will they find the thief?

I liked this book because it was full of action and excitement. The ending is very happy because Kim's future takes a turn for the better. When I found out who the thief of the real platter was I was shocked! Can you guess who the thief is?
