Percy Jackson's seventh-grade school year has been relaxing, for a change. He's been able to live with his mom in New York City, and he hasn't been attacked by monsters even once. That all changes on the last day of school, when an innocent dodgeball game turns into an explosive conflict that sends Percy racing back to Camp Halfblood, the summer camp for kids who are, like Percy, half-mortal and half-divine. When he and his friend Annabeth return there, though, they discover that the camp's safe haven is no longer safe --- the tree that protected the camp for heroes has been poisoned, and monsters are free to attack the camp at will.
Alarmed by other changes at the camp, and haunted by dreams of his absent friend Grover, Percy and Annabeth set off on a quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece, the only substance that can heal the tree and save the camp. Their destination? The Sea of Monsters, known to mortals as the Bermuda Triangle. Along their sea voyage, Percy and his friends are chased by the newly-awakening Kronos and his minions, and helped by Percy's father Poseidon, as well as the god Hermes. Can the young heroes-in-training find the golden fleece and rescue Grover before it's too late?
A sequel to THE LIGHTNING THIEF, THE SEA OF MONSTERS is, like its predecessor, infused with plenty of Greek mythology. In this case, most of the mythological references are to Homer's Odyssey --- from Percy's unfortunate encounter with Circe to Grover's endless weaving of a wedding train. Like the earlier Book Onen the series, though, the novel doesn't take itself too seriously, and Percy's smart-alecky narration and witty chapter titles keep things fresh and funny. It looks like fans of Greek mythology will have more to look forward to as well --- a cliffhanger ending, new characters, and a troublesome prophecy hint at plenty more adventures for Percy and the gang.
