TEACHER'S PET: Maggie
Wild at Heart, No. 7

by Laurie Halse Anderson
Pleasant Company
ISBN: 1584850558
Ages 8-10
144 pages

Middle school is starting and all the vet volunteers at Wild At Heart clinic are happy about it, all that is except Maggie. Elementary school was bad enough. Maggie is dreading middle school. Nobody seems to understand why Maggie has such a problem with school, because they know she's very smart. And she's terrific with dogs, too. What they don't know is that Maggie can't read well, or remember what she reads, or study. She's close to despair over starting another school year.

But guess what she sees in her last class on her first day of school? She walks into the science room, and there's a dog. A gorgeous German shepherd named Scout. He looks smart enough to do all her homework with one paw, and have time left over to play!

Maggie discovers that her science teacher is blind and Scout is his guide dog. The only trouble is, they are having problems adjusting to each other. Maggie knows what's wrong, but will she be able to teach her teacher? Will Maggie's teacher be able to help her learn? Check out this wonderful story about people helping one another, and the dog who eventually helped them all.
