Brenna's parents are licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and Brenna lives in a house next to a nature preserve. It's illegal to hunt on the preserve, let alone put out traps, but sometimes people do anyway. When Brenna discovers a dog dying in a leghold trap, she is enraged and determined to do something about it.

Her older brother Sage is angry, too, and just as determined to make the trapper pay. But when Brenna hears what Sage plans to do, she's frightened. Brenna has to find a way to stop the trapper, and keep Sage from carrying out his plan.
