A Series of Unfortunate Events

written by Lemony Snicket, illustrated by Brett Helquist

In the darkly hilarious book series A Series of Unfortunate Events, author Lemony Snicket shares with readers everything he knows about the Baudelaire family. After much careful research on the Baudelaires, a very wealthy bunch who seem to be the unluckiest clan in the world, Snicket is an expert.

It makes perfect sense that the series starts at the beginning with THE BAD BEGINNING, Book the First. It's in this title that we learn how children Violet, Klaus and baby Sunny Baudelaire become orphans. And from that moment on, we're on a roller coaster ride as the Baudelaires face danger, adventure and doom at every turn. Of course, along with all the gloominess come some pretty good laughs. In all, 13 books have been published --- a most unlucky number.

The tale of three Baudelaire children, who find themselves thrown into an unhappy situation containing a treacherous villain with an evil scheme and bad manners, becomes more and more dreadful on each page. The book introduces the reader to unpleasantries such as a disastrous fire, itchy clothing, a baby trapped in a cage, a plot to steal an enormous fortune, and dusty curtains.

In Lemony Snicket′s eighth ghastly instalment in A Series of Unfortunate Events, I′m sorry to say that the Baudelaire Orphans will spend time in a hospital where they risk encountering a misleading newspaper headline, unnecessary surgery, an intercom system, anesthesia, heart-shaped balloons, and some very startling news about a fire.

In fact, in this appalling ninth instalment in Lemony Snicket′s serial, the siblings must confront a terrible lie, a caravan, and Chabo the wolf baby. With millions of readers worldwide, and the Baudelaire′s fate turning from unpleasant to unseemly, it is clear that Lemony Snicket has taken nearly all the fun out of children′s books.
