The Most Frightening Story Ever Told

Wouldn’t you be totally delighted to find a haunted bookstore?  Billy sure was.

Exactly what Billy Shivers was looking for even he didn’t even know.  Since he and his family had been in that terrible car accident felt stunned.  Then one day he chances upon a most marvelous place --- a bookstore. It is called the Haunted House of Books. This is a place with the trappings of a fun house featuring a floor with ghosts and one with vampires. There’s also a Voodoo room and a basement with mummies. If that isn’t enough there are fantastic booby traps everywhere. There are secret rooms, the Red room, and dark hallways with two little ghost girls guarding one of them. There are also zombies, lights that go on and off and chilling breezes. Strange customers like Mr. Stoker and Father Merrin also frequent the bookstore. Billy couldn’t be more delighted.

"This is a delicious read for the Halloween season or for anyone, anytime who enjoys a touch of the creepy, the spooky and the chill of a ghostly breeze."

Billy reads any and every book he can --- especially in the ghost section. He has conversations with the few customers and the more he learns the more he knows he has found a kind of home here. Billy has some secrets too, but he is not ready to share them. For right now, he is in a perfect place and feels safe.

The owner of this mysterious but wonderful place is the grumpy Mr. Rapscillion. Because Billy is quiet, polite and absolutely loves the haunted bookstore, Mr. Rapscillion eventually warms to the strange little boy. Gradually they form a bond and begin planning events to help get more customers. They even plan a contest centered around:  THE MOST FRIGHTENING STORY EVER TOLD. Even Mr. Rapscillion is nervous about Miss Shelly’s story, but this is sure to be a big draw and it is! There are some very unexpected things that come from this event!

There are numerous references to horror books, movies, authors and famous monsters. Though young readers might not guess all these fun “homages” they do add lots of fun to the story. One thing for sure, readers will absolutely love Billy’s story and the big surprise at the end. “Shivers” indeed!

Philip Kerr’s previous CHILDREN OF THE LAMP series had mysticism and magic, this one has supernatural, horror and a wonderful story of love and acceptance.

This is a delicious read for the Halloween season or for anyone, anytime who enjoys a touch of the creepy, the spooky and the chill of a ghostly breeze.
