Addy Walker and her family (Poppa, Momma, older brother James and
baby sister Esther) are slaves on a big farm called a plantation,
in North Carolina. They work very hard and live in a tiny, cramped
cabin while Master Stevens, the man who owns Addy and her family,
lives in a big, bright house. The Walkers worry about the Civil War
(the war between the northern and southern United States when Abraham
Lincoln was President) raging around them and dream of the day when
they will be free --- not owned by anyone.
