ARTEMIS FOWL by Eoin Colfer

Fast Facts

  1. Eoin is an Irish name and is pronounced like "Owen."

  2. Eoin Colfer's secret ambition is to be a cartoonist and his favorite kind of music is heavy metal.

  3. Before becoming a writer, Eoin was an elementary school teacher, and both of his parents were teachers as well. Prior to writing the bestselling Artemis Fowl series, he wrote several books for younger children, including his first book BENNY AND OMAR, written in 1999.

  4. Months before its publication in 2001, ARTEMIS FOWL sparked a worldwide publishing frenzy, with both publishers and film companies vying for the rights to the book and its sequels. A movie is currently in the works for ARTEMIS FOWL, although no release date has been set as of yet.

  5. Despite the characters in Artemis Fowl being so fantastical, many of their personality traits are based on people from real life, which is why, if you take away all their high-tech gadgetry and magic, they seem so realistic.

  6. The inspiration for the fairy police came from an old TV cop show "Hill Street Blues," which Eoin watched as a kid and loved because of its portrayal of cops as real people rather than superheroes. Being Irish, he also drew a lot of inspiration from traditional Irish mythology, folklore and superstitions.

  7. Eoin's favorite hobby is reading --- he enjoys reading just about anything, including the labels on jars! When he's not reading, he enjoys parachuting and going to the movies.

  8. Eoin's first attempt at writing was a play about the Norse gods that he wrote in the sixth grade. Everyone died in the end except for him.

  9. As of March 2005, more than three million Artemis Fowl books have been sold in 30 different languages.
