Fast Facts
- A gecko stood on the hood of Bruce Hale's car in the late 1980s, although the car was traveling along. The gecko impressed Mr. Hale so much that he went home and started drawing gecko cartoons.
- The Chet Gecko series does not represent Mr. Hale's first gecko books. He published five Moki the Surfing Gecko books in Hawaii before Chet arrived on the scene.
- In 1989, Mr. Hale was downsized out of his job for the phone company. He wasn't too sad, though, because his first two Moki the Gecko books were published that year.
- Mr. Hale did NOT want to write about a gecko again. He wanted his detective to be another kind of animal. However, the detective's name was "Chet Gecko" and the author thought it sounded so perfect that he gave in and wrote more gecko books.
- My dictionary says a gecko is "any of a group of soft-skinned, insect eating lizards with short, stout bodies, large heads, weak limbs, and suction pads on their feet." They are very common in Hawaii.
- The SCROFULOUS tree frequently mentioned in the Chet Gecko books appears to be a tree with tuberculosis of the lymph glands! (Or maybe just a crazy invention!)
- Mr. Hale is thinking about writing a CHET GECKO cookbook, featuring such recipes as Mosquito Marshmallow Surprise.
- Mr. Hale is a performer; when he goes on school visits, he often wears different hats and acts out different characters.
- Chet may star in a movie! Stay tuned.
