Characters
Jared --- a 9-year-old boy who is feeling quite unhappy and angry ever since his father left him and his family. He has taken out his frustrations on other children, uncharacteristically getting into a number of fights in school. For the most part though, Jared is a good kid who tends to be quite curious and inquisitive. Although he argues with his sister frequently, he nevertheless loves both her and his twin brother very much.
Simon --- Jared's identical twin brother who can best be described as an animal lover. He buys and catches all kinds of animals and keeps them as pets. He enjoys taking care of his non-human friends and is very attentive to their needs.
Mallory --- Jared and Simon's 13-year-old sister. Her favorite activity is fencing; she practices all the time with her very own sword. She acts much tougher than her brothers and hates when other people mess with her --- and she isn't afraid to use her fist if necessary.
The children's mother --- she believes that relocating to their "new" house will help everyone, especially Jared, adjust more smoothly to life without Dad. She is completely oblivious to the scary adventures in which her children are involved.
Thimbletack --- the house brownie that warns the children about the Faeries who want to harm them. He is described as a small nut-brown man with leather overalls, a wide-brimmed hat, eyes as black as beatles, and a large, red nose.
Hogsqueal --- a self-professed hobgoblin that calls the children insulting names. He has been locked in a cage for letting out one of the cats that his fellow goblins caught.
Aunt Lucinda --- Arthur Spiderwick's daughter and the great aunt of Jared, Simon and Mallory. She has long white hair, pale skin and a hunched back. It turns out she knows all about the Faeries that have been causing the children so much trouble.
Lorengorm --- a leaf-horned elf with flushed skin. He demands the Field Guide be given to him so that it can be destroyed.
The Korting --- the dwarf lord who informs Jared and Simon that the end of human rule is approaching.
Mulgarath --- a dangerous shape-shifting ogre who ultimately takes possession of the Field Guide and plans to rebuild the world in silver, copper and iron.
Arthur Spiderwick --- the Grace children's great-great uncle. Jared meets Uncle Arthur for the first time in THE WRATH OF MULGARATH, hoping that he can provide any information that will help Jared and his siblings rescue their mother from Mulgarath and his army of goblins.
