THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES
by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Fast Facts

  1. Jared believes that Simon will be either a veterinarian or lion tamer when he grows up, and that Mallory will be either an Olympic fencer or "in jail for stabbing someone with a sword."

  2. Simon's amazing collection of pets includes fish, mice, lizards, tadpoles and crickets. He keeps them all in his room.

  3. There are many different kinds of Faeries mentioned in this series. They include brownies, boggarts, goblins, sprites, trolls, phookas, dwarves and knockers.

  4. Brownies are helpful little men, while boggarts are brownies that go crazy if you anger them. They love tormenting those they once protected and take utter delight in causing tons of mischief.

  5. Goblins have faces like frogs and eyes that are dead white with no pupils. They have sharp claws, jagged teeth that are made of pieces of shattered glass and bits of scrap metal, and green bloated bodies. They travel in groups looking for trouble; missing cats and dogs is a sign that they're in the area.

  6. Sprites are tiny green and brown creatures with wings resembling leaves and faces like humans. Grass and flower buds grow from their tiny heads instead of hair.

  7. Trolls have long fingers and black eyes. They try to lure their victims into dangerous situations through temptation and deception. For example, one troll tried to tempt Jared and Mallory to come closer to it by promising to cover its eyes while they retrieved Mallory's sword. But Mallory observed the little creature peeking through a gap in its fingers.

  8. Phookas have the body of a monkey and a face resembling a rabbit's. They have long ears and whiskers, blackish-brown fur and a long tail. Jared, Simon and Mallory encounters one phooka that they think is crazy, because the creature isn't making much sense when it speaks.

  9. One day Lucinda was attacked by a bunch of little green monsters that scraped her legs and arms with their claws. Lucinda's cousin Melvina thought Lucinda was cutting herself, so she sent Lucinda to a psychiatric hospital.

  10. In LUCINDA'S SECRET Jared is so angry at losing the Field Guide that he nearly hits Mallory. Stunned that he would be capable of doing such a horrible thing to his own sister, a teary-eyed Jared apologizes to her soon after.

  11. Dwarves are small men with skin as gray as stone. They're great craftspeople, and the iron that hurts other faeries don't bother them.

  12. Knockers are small pale figures with huge luminous eyes and a whispery voice, and are known for their constant tapping. They live in mines and warn miners of collapses and other dangers.

  13. Included in THE IRONWOOD TREE is a carbon copy of Jared's suspension/expulsion letter. The J. Waterhouse Middle School has suspended Jared and recommends that he be expelled because of his disciplinary problems.

  14. Dragons, who are helping to defend Mulgarath's palace of trash at the edge of town, are frightening creatures --- they have poisonous venom, teeth as sharp as daggers, and bodies as quick as whips.

  15. Uncle Arthur informs Jared in THE WRATH OF MULGARATH that there faeries in every continent and that people from all over the world are researching these fascinating creatures.
