I vividly remember being seven years old and waking up sometimes in the middle of the night, thoroughly convinced that someone or something was hiding in my room. I'd run downstairs to tell my mom how scared I was. She would always assure me that I had nothing to worry about --- my mind was merely playing tricks on me. Eventually, I accepted the fact that no strange visitors ever inhabited my room --- no monsters, no ghosts, no burglars, no scary creatures of any kind.
Jared Grace, his twin brother Simon, and their older sister Mallory are in a similar situation in THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, experiencing the same kind of fears as I did. The only difference (and it's a significant one) is that these children have a legitimate reason to worry, because their lives are being turned upside down by faeries. These small, mischievous creatures cause quite a ruckus in the Grace's new house, even going so far as to physically harm Mallory, Simon and his pets. Unbeknownst to their mom, the Grace children are determined to do whatever they can to rid themselves of these annoying and potentially dangerous creatures.
