Constance (Connie) ––– the daughter of the cleaning lady and Owen’s new friend.
Mr. Page ––– a mysterious man who gives the Book of the King to Owen.
Slimesees ––– a creature that guards the water underground.
Karl ––– Mr. Reeder’s evil friend who is not really human.
Mucker ––– a small worm that grows large and strong as Owen reads the Book of the King.

Watcher ––– a doglike creature whose task it is to watch for the Wormling’s return.
Bardig ––– a Lowlander who is loyal to the King and dies defending Owen.
Dreadwart ––– a deadly creature who fights for the Dragon and attacks Owen.
Bardig’s wife ––– a defender of Owen even when townspeople distrust him.
Connor ––– the embittered son of Bardig who attacks Owen.
Mordecai ––– an exiled servant to the King who mentors Owen.
Erol ––– a cave dweller who befriends Owen and Watcher.
Kimshi ––– Erol’s wife.
Starbuck ––– Erol’s son and Owen’s friend.
The King’s Son ––– the object of Owen’s quest.
Gwenolyn ––– the King’s kidnapped daughter.
Queen ––– a prisoner of the Dragon.
Rotag ––– an alligator that helps Owen.
Batwing and Tusin ––– flying creatures that are loyal to the King and assist Owen.
Qwamay ––– an imposter who pretends to be the King’s Son.
Changeling ––– a Gollum-like creature that changes shape at will.
Nicodemus ––– a guardian of the light who protects Owen.
Scribe ––– one who helped the King write the Book of the King.
Gunnar ––– Connor’s warrior friend.
Drushka ––– a bakery woman who Owen believes is his mother.
Rachel ––– the Scribe’s wife.
Burden ––– a horse-like animal that assists Owen.
Dreyanna ––– Connor’s imprisoned wife.
King and Queen of the West ––– parents of a captured princess who the Dragon is holding prisoner.
