Susan Stockdale

Biography

Susan Stockdale

Susan Stockdale is a noted author and illustrator of children’s picture books including STRIPES OF ALL TYPES, BRING ON THE BIRDS and FABULOUS FISHES. Her books celebrate nature with exuberance and charm and have won awards from the American Library Association, Parents' Choice, Bank Street College of Education and the National Science Teachers Association. Susan’s engaging rhymes and artwork elicit praise. The Washington Post exclaimed, "If the paintings are the feast, Stockdale's words are the dessert."

She began her art career in 1976 as a painter of fantasy landscapes, which she exhibited in galleries and juried shows. Susan also freelanced as a textile designer for the apparel industry, designing fabric for clothing sold at Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus and other retail stores. Her work with textiles gave her an opportunity to express her love of pattern and color, which remain distinctive features of her artwork today.

Her first children’s book, SOME SLEEP STANDING UP, was published in 1996. Since then, she has written and illustrated NATURE'S PAINTBRUSH; CARRY ME! Animal Babies on the Move; FABULOUS FISHES; BRING ON THE BIRDS and STRIPES OF ALL TYPES. Her next book, SPECTACULAR SPOTS, will be published in 2015.

Susan researches her books extensively, working closely with scientists to vet her text and illustrations for factual accuracy. She travels to see her subjects, as well. To create Bring On the Birds, an ALA Notable Book, she visited the Galapagos Islands. While there, she watched the Blue-footed Boobies perform their lively mating dance and the Great Frigatebird puff out its crimson chest. To research her forthcoming book about spotted animals, she toured the rainforests of Costa Rica.

Called “eye-pleasingly dramatic” by Horn Book and "a feast for the eyes" by Kirkus Reviews, her distinctive animal imagery is featured on puzzles, coloring books, notecards and other products sold worldwide.

Susan received a B.A. in Studio Art from Occidental College in Los Angeles, graduating cum laude. She also studied art with illustrator Luis de Horna in Salamanca, Spain and Ansai Uchima at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. She lives with her husband in Chevy Chase, Maryland and speaks frequently about her bookmaking process at schools, libraries and other venues in the U.S. and abroad.
