Key Character Bios

Posted by Shara

Sure, the whole Harry Potter series is named after The Boy Who Lived, but believe us --- there are many characters who are worth getting to know. Here are the descriptions of five major players.

Ronald Weasley: Ron is the youngest brother in a family of seven, with only a younger sister, Ginny, behind him. He comes from an old wizarding family, the Weasleys, who all have red hair and are quite poor. Ron met Harry Potter on the Hogwarts Express and the two become fast friends. At Hogwarts, Ron was sorted into Gryffindor House, like every other member of the Weasley Family. Though not an outstanding student, Ron is quite clever thanks to his impressive skills at wizard chess. Ron joins Harry on all his adventures in and out of Hogwarts.

Hermione Granger: Hermione is a muggle-born witch and the smartest student at Hogwarts. She was sorted into Gryffindor House and became friends with Harry and Ron after a troll attack in the girls bathroom. Hermione is well-read and enjoys reading heavy tomes like HOGWARTS: A History for pleasure. Because of her muggle parents, Hermione is sometimes discriminated against, but she proves her abilities time and time again, quickly becoming the top student at Hogwarts. Her intellect comes in handy whenever she joins Harry to fight the dark forces.

Albus Dumbledore:  Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts and one of the greatest wizards who ever lived. At over 100 years old, Dumbledore has achieved an Order of Merlin, first class, as well as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, the title of Grand Sorcerer, Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, and his very own Famous Wizard Card which comes in certain boxes of Chocolate Frogs candy. He is often considered the greatest headmaster Hogwarts has ever had.

Severus Snape: Professor Snape is the greasy-haired, black robe-wearing potions master at Hogwarts. He teaches and lives in the Hogwarts dungeon. Though he's a talented potion maker, Snape would prefer to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, but is regularly denied the position by Dumbledore. Snape is also head of Slytherin house, and therefore treats the three other houses with contempt, especially Gryffindors. Snape particularly dislikes Harry Potter, and gives him quite a hard time throughout his years at Hogwarts.

Rubeus Hagrid: Hagrid is the half-giant keeper of the keys and grounds at Hogwarts. He was expelled from Hogwarts in his third year, framed for a crime he didn't commit, and his wand was broken in half. However, Albus Dumbledore allowed him to remain on the grounds to serve as gamekeeper. Hagrid is the one who first takes baby Harry to the Dursleys via flying motorcycle, and then later personally delivers Harry's Hogwarts letter and takes Harry to Diagon Alley to do his school shopping. Harry, Ron and Hermione become good friends with Hagrid over the years, regularly coming to his hut for a visit.
