Tribute - Lisa Fiedler, author of MOUSEHART

MOUSEHEART author Lisa Fiedler knew she had stumbled upon something special the minute she read the word "muggle." Find out exactly why she loves the Harry Potter series in her below guest post.

I knew the minute I read the word 'muggle' that something big was about to happen.   Not just in the story but in the world.  Here was a writer who knew how to create --- really and truly CREATE --- words, places, feelings, characters and histories that no one had ever experienced before.  Muggle --- such a simple world, and yet, entirely new and original.  It was a hint of things to come, an invitation to adventure.  And of course, Ms. Rowling did not disappoint.  The scope of her vision and imagination still boggles my mind.  As a writer, I am thoroughly wowed by her ability to make us believe in the vastness of the Hogwarts fantasy.

And then there's Harry himself ... as heroes go, from the very beginning, 'the boy who lived' is about as intriguing as it is possible to be.  He's such a wonderful combination of vulnerability and power.  I'm still not sure how J.K. managed to make a magical character feel so real.  I think this is why kids (and adults) respond to Harry with such love and excitement. He feels like someone who could be your friend in real life.  A mere ten years ago the words Wingardium Leviosa didn't exist but now they are a part of our collective lexicon.  That's pretty incredible.  Thanks for the magic, the wonder, the suspense, the spine tingles and most of all, the inspiration.

Lisa Fiedler is the author of many novels for children and young adults. She divides her time between Connecticut and the Rhode Island seashore, where she lives happily with her very patient husband, her brilliant and beloved daughter, and their two incredibly spoiled golden retrievers.
