Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls, Book Six: Blast from the Past

Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls, Book Six: Blast from the Past

Allie Finkle has an absolute set idea of how things should be done, hence the title “Rules for Girls.” And although she may not be the Emily Post of the middle school set, she tries very hard to find a sense of order in the chaos that is puberty. Her adventures involve learning (and recording) major lessons about the big things in life --- friendships, body image, families, school --- but mostly friends and how nothing seems to go exactly the way it should with them. Readers are quite fortunate that Meg Cabot has created such a darling girl with enough hutzpah to run a multinational corporation, let alone a school courtyard.

This time Allie is going on a field trip with her fourth-grade class and is quite excited about it --- not in terms of where they’re going (to a historic one-room schoolhouse, built back before there was the Internet or even cell phones), but about the fact that they will have to take a bus to get there. In the name of safety and security, each student must be paired up with a “buddy,” someone who will be his or her companion for the entirety of the event. Of course, it has to be a dramatic choice, and so none other than Allie’s ex-best friend, Mary Kay, whom she considers to be a traitor, turns out to be assigned to her side. Allie is less than thrilled, but that’s the way the ball bounces. And so begins her newest adventure.

Team Shawnee, the group with which Allie and Mary Kay explore the pioneer village of their trip, becomes the breeding ground for a lot of good questions, especially wondering about long-time feuds whose beginnings are no longer remembered and whether or not you recall how the fight started should be a prerequisite to the continuation of said fight. But in the course of learning the answer to that question, there are a lot of slapsticky, crazy things that happen, and the ending is a little bit of what you would expect and a lot of what you might not.

Adding to the charm of Meg Cabot’s latest middle-grade work is a compendium of all of Allie’s rules after the last chapter. BLAST FROM THE PAST is a highly engaging book for girls and another wonderful addition to the series.
