Cool Art: 50 Fantastic Facts for Kids of All Ages

COOL ART: 50 Fantastic Facts for Kids of All Ages by Simon Armstrong helps kids open their minds to the art world. The author wants the reader to learn about art history, see how art is created and why certain pieces made a splash or created controversy when they hit the art world.

COOL ART presents ideas and historical context --- whether politics, religion or culture --- that may have influenced art work. For instance, Romanticism developed as a response against the industrial revolution. Later, Realism began as a revolt against Romanticism by delving into themes of daily life.Art concepts are explored too. For example, there are sections on the importance of and different kinds of perspective, using color to express emotion and symbolic meaning.

COOL ART also delves into controversies, like when some critics claimed that Pop Art wasn’t really art and when Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s pieces blurred the line between art and politics.

A compact book that packs in tons of useful information

The book is organized in easy sections that take the reader through art movements, top artists’ works from each period, photography, performance art and more. It’s filled with starbursts that describe the big picture and colorful boxes chock full of information.

One of the funniest sections of the book deals with comments that one can overhear at a museum, and the author makes some pretty good retorts. He keeps it light by encouraging the museumgoer to think about the artwork on display and contemplate what ideas the artist is trying to convey. While some pieces of artwork may look easy, it’s only because a great artist made it look that way.

COOL ART is a compact book that packs in tons of useful information. If a child has plans to visit an art museum that has certain works on display, he or she could easily look up some facts from the book beforehand to enhance his or her visit. The author includes a list of ways we can appreciate art, too, such as listening to your own opinion, opening your mind and educating yourself. I think the book is great to have on hand because it gives you a lot to think about before you walk through the museum.
