Fizzopolis: The Trouble with Fuzzwonker Fizz

FIZZOPOLIS by Patrick Carman reads like one wild sugar rush. This fast-paced and quirky novel follows ten-year-old Harold Fuzzwonker as he races to keep the Fuzzwonker family secret from getting out.

Harold’s dad, Dr. Fuzzwonker, is a food doctor who created Fuzzwonker Fizz, a soda pop that causes you to have extraordinarily long burps. Needless to say, it’s very popular. Not only is the Fuzzwonker Fizz recipe a secret, but so is Dr. Fuzzwonker’s underground laboratory, Fizzopolis, and the furry alien-like creatures, Fizzies, that live there.

"This absurd and zany world created by Patrick Carmen will entertain middle grade readers and have them bubbling with laugher."

When Garvin Snood --- the spy for Fuzzwonker’s competitor, Snood Candy --- inadvertently steals Floyd, Harold’s best good buddy (and the most rambunctious Fizzy), Harold has to cross enemy lines into the Snood Candy Factory to rescue Floyd and keep Fizzopolis a secret.

And to think, life would be so much easier for Harold if he had gotten what he wanted on his 10th birthday: a dinosaur.

This absurd and zany world created by Patrick Carmen will entertain middle grade readers and have them bubbling with laugher. Carmen’s writing (and Harold’s wild imagination) is perfectly paired with comical sketches by Brian Sheesley, making the experience all the more authentic, as readers follow the personal journal of Harold and Floyd as they read the book. The first-person journal perspective will make readers feel invited and welcomed into the wacky land of Fizzopolis.

FIZZOPOLIS is full of inventions and characters so ridiculous that the only way to make sense of it all is to just go along for the ride. Like Floyd, the story bounces every-which way, but ultimately ends on solid ground. FIZZOPOLIS by Patrick Carmen is great for any middle grade reader who wants to explore, create and invent. This will be a series kids will race through…not unlike guzzling a bottle of Fuzzwonker Fizz.
