George

Review

George

Middle-grade literature needs more books like GEORGE. This is a sweet, unassuming story about middle school student George. When people see George, they think that they see a boy, but George knows that she’s a girl. When George’s teacher announces that her class will be putting on a production of CHARLOTTE’S WEB, George desperately wants to play the role of Charlotte. When the teacher says that George can’t play the role because she is a boy, George and her best friend, Kelly, come up with up a plan so that everyone can see who George really is.

GEORGE is a great, quick read that has something for everyone. There is a lot to learn for every reader --- from middle-grader to adult --- about what it’s like to live life as a transperson. Every person is different, of course, but witnessing life from the perspective of George brings about key issues of acceptance, understanding and sensitivity. This subject matter needs to be brought to the attention of all readers, and I’m glad that GEORGE, and other books like it, are being published. Diverse LGBTQIA* stories like GEORGE are absolutely necessary, and I hope to see more from this author soon.

I especially liked the interactions between George and her older brother, who is more of a “stereotypical” boy who enjoys playing video games and hanging out with his friends. When George explains who she really is to her brother, he does not act in the way one would expect.

Author Alex Gino does an excellent job of writing from the perspective of a child --- I appreciated the care taken in the character development of George and her best friend, Kelly. Gino approached issues of bullying and George’s not being accepted well, and also wrote a wonderful, heartwarming ending. I would recommend GEORGE to all readers --- I’m certain you will learn something new.
