Hearts

When Penelope the Fox drops her heart into the sea, she goes on a magical adventure to attempt to retrieve it. Filled with Brazilian-born artist Thereza Rowe’s exciting illustrations, HEARTS is an imaginatively thrilling book for brand-new readers. The art is so nicely paired with the sparse text that it speeds the storytelling along. Sound effects, symbols, and more are used to create a tale that children will love to read (and parents might truly enjoy acting out). The visuals seem to be inspired by hieroglyphics and cave paintings, in a way, which generates a fun, exciting look. The book is weird, but in the best possible, offbeat way.

The end of the book features a helpful guide for parents and teachers: How to Read Comics with Kids spotlights several helpful tips to allow kids to develop their own love for reading.
