Limitless: 24 Remarkable American Women of Vision, Grit, and Guts

Artist Leah Tinari has created a book of portraits of 24 American women she considers to be powerful role models for both girls and boys --- for anybody, regardless of gender. She got the idea for the book when she was working on a series of portraits of all the male presidents. She wanted a series of portraits of women who deserved to be recognized, too.

"This unusual book of biographies is deceptively simple....be sure to add this book to your shelf of awesome books about awesome women."

Each woman featured in the book is represented by a painted portrait on one side of a two-page spread, with a quote either by that person or about that person on the facing page. Each portrait is predominantly black-and-white with a splash of color. Each portrait is “framed” by a series of single words and/or phrases that describe that particular person. For instance, she uses the word “Politician” and the phrases “1st black woman elected to Congress” and “fought for immigration rights” (among others) as a “frame” around the portrait of Shirley Chisholm. A bit of additional information about each woman featured in the book is included in a section in the end matter.

This unusual book of biographies is deceptively simple. At first glance, this appears to be nothing more than a series of portraits with short quotes. But, if you take the time to really look at each painting, and read all the words that “frame” each portrait, you come away with a “different picture” of each woman. Try it for yourself. Then be sure to add this book to your shelf of awesome books about awesome women.
