Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 3 The Ship of the Dead

Magnus Chase and his unforgettable friends are back for their third and final adventure in THE SHIP OF THE DEAD, the latest middle-grade novel from bestselling author Rick Riordan (you know, the Percy Jackson and Kane Chronicles guy). This time, Magnus and his chosen family must face their greatest and most harrowing adventure yet --- facing Loki himself on his massive, evil ship made of toenails. Gross, right? Along the way, countless giants, zombies and all other manner of strange Norse creatures attempt to thwart Magnus and cause the start of the world-ending Ragnarok. Can Magnus and his friends find a way to defeat Loki in time to save the world?

I had a hard time putting this book down until I knew every last detail of what would happen to this amazing cast of characters as they traveled through the nine realms on this challenging quest. While there are tons of reasons to love THE SHIP OF THE DEAD and the other novels in this series, it is the characters who really keep me coming back.

"Riordan just keeps getting better....The combination of Norse mythology, incredible and diverse characters and the wisecracking humor make the Magnus Chase series impossible to put down."

This story goes into great deal about the pasts of Alex Fierro, the genderfluid rebel (and my favorite); Samirah al-Abbas, the dedicated Muslim Valkyrie; Thomas Jefferson Jr., the brave black Union soldier; and Hearthstone, the deaf elf who can perform incredible feats of magic --- to name just a few. I dare you not to fall in love with each and every character in this story. Fans of Riodran’s previous series will also be happy to see some cameos here, as well. I love the way Riordan manages to balance each character’s storied history, beliefs and unique qualities with the epic story. The quiet moments are touching, and those instances make the massive battles feel even more life-or-death.

Of course, because the characters are so intriguing, that makes the exciting plot of THE SHIP OF THE DEAD all the more interesting. Riordan packs in even more Norse mythology while managing to keep the story fresh and interesting. Be prepared to meet some new gods and monsters and maybe even learn a thing or two along the way.

Now, I have read just about every Riordan book there is, and as soon as I hit the final page, THE SHIP OF THE DEAD immediately sailed its way to the top of my favorites list. Riordan just keeps getting better with each story he pens and every new series he creates. The combination of Norse mythology, incredible and diverse characters and the wisecracking humor make the Magnus Chase series impossible to put down. Even thought by now I know what to expect with each story, Riordan still manages to impress and entertain with undeniable humor and heartfelt moments that will stick with you long after closing this book. While SHIP OF THE DEAD may be the final installment in the Magnus Chase series for now, I do not think this is the last we will see from these characters. At least, I hope it isn’t!
