Miss Communication (Babymouse Tales from the Locker)

Babymouse is back in MISS COMMUNICATION, the second in the middle grade series starring the beloved character, and getting herself into trouble like always.

"Fans of Babymouse will enjoy seeing her grow and reach new milestones through this middle grade series. MISS COMMUNICATION is laugh out loud funny and quick illustrated read!"

In MISS COMMUNICATION, Babymouse sees everyone at her school absorbed into their phones, which at first doesn’t bother her, but soon enough she begins to feel left out of the conversation. Quite literally, she doesn’t understand all of the text language --- even her grandfather is more tech savvy than she is. Babymouse begs her parents for a phone and they give in on the promise that she takes care of it and doesn’t neglect her school work. Instantly, Babymouse is hooked and wants to be apart of the popularity contest of how many followers everyone has.

As a character, Babymouse isn’t very likable because she is overly dramatic and self-absorbed. She is always making mistakes and doesn’t always follow the proper social etiquette, but that’s what makes her so enjoyable to read. Her mistakes are funny and create great teachable moments through the novel, although many aspects are too dramatized to even relate to.

The illustrations in the story really help bring the humor to life. I loved seeing some of Babymouse’s outlandish thoughts about emojis and selfies. My favorite drawing was a Lord of the Rings-inspired Babymouse looking like Golem and her phone was the precious ring. This isn’t something all middle graders will know, but the parents and teachers will find the imagery hysterical.

While at times this story of getting a first cell phone feels dated and not the current learning curve most young readers will face when interacting with phones, MISS COMMUNICATION imparts many great lessons that are applicable to any reader.

Fans of Babymouse will enjoy seeing her grow and reach new milestones through this middle grade series. MISS COMMUNICATION is laugh out loud funny and quick illustrated read!
