Review

Ollie and the Science of Treasure Hunting (A 14 Day Mystery)

This book is the sequel to MOXIE AND THE ART OF RULE BREAKING. In that book, Ollie and his friend Moxie help solve the mystery of a stolen art collection. As such, Ollie has been in the news a lot and is getting quite a lot of media attention. In an effort to take a break from the publicity, he enrolls in a two-week Boy Scout Wilderness Camp on the Boston Harbor Islands.

When the scouts find out there is supposed to be a stash of pirate treasure on the island, and that Ollie knows a thing or two about solving mysteries, Ollie inadvertently gets caught up in the hunt for the loot. In the process, he puts himself and a couple of his fellow campers in danger.

As a disclaimer, I did not read the first book about Ollie, so I wasn’t familiar with the character’s back story or the author’s writing style. I liked how the author developed her characters, and I like the fast-paced action, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the book. For instance, Ollie wears glasses, and he’s a bit clumsy, so he falls down a lot. Every time he fell down, his glasses flew off, but they never broke. It just seemed to me that either Ollie’s glasses were very loose or he was very lucky that they didn’t break. Also, at one point in the story, Ollie suffers a broken ankle. Despite his injury, it doesn’t seem to slow him down much. It’s just little things like that that bugged me. To be fair, I read an advanced, uncorrected proof of the story, so maybe these things are addressed in the final version.

Although I realize Grey was an essential character in the story, I question her presence at a Boy Scout camp. Even though her father was a troop leader, it didn’t seem appropriate for her to be there.

All told, I liked the story. I think I would have like it better if I had read the prequel to it, though.
