One Fine Day, Volume 2

One Fine Day continues its cuteness in the second volume. The three main characters are all animals --- Nanai is a dog, Guru is a cat, and Rand is a mouse. They live with the serene human No-Ah (perhaps a pun on all the creatures in Noah’s Ark?) and are sometimes shown as the animals they are. Other times, however, they’re anthropomorphized. Sometimes Nanai and Guru look like children, only they have tails and dog and cat ears, respectively. An anthropomorphized Rand looks like an even smaller child in a mouse costume complete with a hood. They’re not the only animals like this. There are also talking birds and other humanized cats who walk in and out of the pages.

The second volume takes us through days 14 through 22. Each day has its own title and mini storyline. In the first story, Nanai goes to the library and helps a woman cross the street. But the library book is late and that worries Nanai, who doesn’t want to cause problems. In the second story, the characters are told a tale about the moon being sad, a tale that makes them all melancholy. Then meet the moon itself when it comes down to earth, and they have to help it get back into the sky. In the third story, a street cat looks for companionship and seeks out Rand. We may think of cats hunting mice, though that isn’t the case here.

As you can see, each story has a different theme, and they don’t have one main plot. It continues on like this, with stories of treasure-hunting, dealing with difficult people and Nanai and Guru getting jealous when the street cat hangs out with Rand and not them. After the last chapter, there are still a few one-column stories as a bonus.

Sometimes bad things do happen to the characters, but it’s never anything very intense. For the most part, One Fine Day is light and easily accessible to young readers. It might be a good way to encourage reluctant readers who enjoy the art style and want to read what’s going on. The art is very cute, going hand-in-hand with the style of storytelling. As something extra, the book comes with a small color poster that can be unfolded from inside the front cover. It’s a picture of humanized Nanai and Guru with some baby birds.
