Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue! An Origami Yoda Book

It has been three weeks since Principal Rabbski of McQuarrie Middle School promised students that she would do something about FunTime.

The kids at McQuarrie staged a Star Wars-inspired rebellion against the annoying and useless test prep program in Tom Angleberger’s last Origami Yoda book, THE SURPRISE ATTACK OF JABBA THE PUPPET. And now, in the fifth book in the series, PRINCESS LABELMAKER TO THE RESCUE, the rebels are still working to free the school from the evil FunTime empire.

As fans of this incredibly clever and funny series know, the books are the “case files” compiled by about ten middle-school friends chronicling their lives at McQuarrie and are centered on the strange wisdom and unexpected leadership of Origami Yoda. Origami Yoda is a paper finger puppet worn by the school’s weirdest kid, Dwight. But Dwight and Origami Yoda have been reliable sources of advice and friendship for the kids who now understand themselves to be the Rebel Alliance.

PRINCESS LABELMAKER is more than just entertaining…it is a story that asks readers to think critically about issues like education, teacher-student relationships, school community and the importance of being yourself and standing up for what you know is right.

In this latest installment, Dwight has distanced himself from the rebellion, but Origami remains their leader (a very Origami Yoda-like paradox). Origami Yoda has been encouraging the rebels, Tommy and Foldy-Wan, Kellen and Luke, Harvey and Anakin, Amy and R2-D2, and all the others to turn to Principal Rabbski, but the rebels don’t trust her and believe her to be in support of the FunTime program. As the rebels try to figure out their next move, one among them, Princess Labelmaker, turns the case files over to Principal Rabbski!  Will Principal Rabbksi use the force to get rid of FunTime or will the school board draw her over to the Dark Side? Will the students at McQuarrie finally get their beloved electives back or will they be stuck with the terrible FunTime videos and standardized tests next year, too? And, will the identity of the mysterious Princess Labelmaker ever be revealed?

Just like all the other Origami Yoda books, PRINCESS LABELMAKER is laugh out loud funny and super smart, as well. Angleberger’s Star Wars jokes and references are continually astute and witty, and the characters are diverse and relatable. However, the book is also provocative and thoughtful, as the students try to figure out what it means if a classmate is gay, why one family’s religious beliefs keep him from the pop culture they all love and, most especially, work against a system they recognize as unjust and oppressive.  PRINCESS LABELMAKER is more than just entertaining, though it is certainly that; it is a story that asks readers to think critically about issues like education, teacher-student relationships, school community and the importance of being yourself and standing up for what you know is right.
