Ranger's Apprentice, Book 12: The Royal Ranger

Review

Ranger's Apprentice, Book 12: The Royal Ranger

I’ve been a fan of John Flanagan and his Ranger’s Apprentice series ever since I picked up the first book several years ago. Flanagan has created a host of memorable and likeable characters --- Halt, Pauline, Will, Alyss, Cassandra, Horace and King Duncan --- that he keeps mentioning throughout the series.

THE ROYAL RANGER introduces a new character --- Madelyn (Maddie, for short), the daughter of Princess Cassandra and Sir Horace. Both Cassandra and Horace are great friends with Will, the Ranger’s apprentice whose life and exploits we have followed throughout the series.

I’ve been a fan of John Flanagan and his Ranger’s Apprentice series ever since I picked up the first book.

In this volume, Will is suffering from the loss of his wife, Alyss, who died while saving someone from a burning building. Will has put all other considerations aside so he can avenge Alyss’s death by tracking down and killing Jory Ruhl --- the man who started the fire.

But, before he can do so, Halt asks Will to do something that has never been done before --- take on a female apprentice, Maddie.  After some hesitation, Will agrees, as it does them both good; Maddie, a teenager, is driving her parents crazy and Will needs something to occupy his mind besides his obsession for revenge. The results of the new apprenticeship could not have been foreseen by anyone.

This is the 12th, and supposedly the last, book in the series. However, Flanagan left the ending wide open for another book about Maddie, so, we’ll see.

I suppose this book would be most enjoyed by readers who are already familiar with the series and know the history of the characters, but I think the author does a good job of providing the back story in order to put the current story into perspective. One could enjoy it as a stand-alone title, but it would be that much more satisfying as a continuation of the series.
