She Did It!: 21 Women Who Changed the Way We Think

written by Emily Arnold McCully illustrations by Emily Arnold McCully

Author Emily Arnold McCully has profiled 21 women in this book, each in a different chapter. Each chapter has a colored artist rendering of the featured person on one page, with the person’s name, and birth year on the facing page. The next 8-12 pages are filled with interesting biographical information about that person, with at least one more illustration in each chapter. Also, inserts about events taking place during that person’s lifetime, that either influenced the person or were influenced by the person, are also included in the main text of each chapter. Each chapter ends with a quote by that person. Each featured woman’s profile is listed in chronological order, except for one. I don’t know if that was accidental or by design. The majority of the women profiled are no longer with us, but five of them are still alive.

"This book is filled with lots of great information about these incredible women. It would make a wonderful addition to any biographical library collection, particularly one geared to notable women."

An additional chapter at the end is titled ‘Second Wave Feminism.” This chapter is about a number of women and events that shaped women’s lives after they got the right to vote (which happened during the “First Wave”). The “Second Wave” was about gender equality. The author includes an extensive list of Sources used in the book, broken down into those used for each individual chapter.

Readers will probably be familiar with women like photographer Dorothea Lange or tennis great Billie Jean King. But readers will learn about women like Ida Minerva Tarbell, who was a 19th century investigative journalist, and Ella Baker, who was the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement, among others.

This book is filled with lots of great information about these incredible women. It would make a wonderful addition to any biographical library collection, particularly one geared to notable women.
