The Dumbest Idea Ever!

Legions of fans were bereft at the news that Jimmy Gownley was ending his beloved AMELIA RULES! series after 2012’s HER PERMANENT RECORD. But those fans have good news now: Gownley has released a new work of nonfiction, THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER!, chronicling his difficult transition from grade school to high school.

Gownley was a star at his small Catholic grade school, Immaculate Heart, in Girardville, in the heart of Pennsylvania coal country. His grades were top-notch, and he was a star on his basketball team. But then he came down with chicken pox, causing him to miss the championship game (they lost). And as if that wasn’t suffering enough, his chicken pox were immediately followed by a vicious bout of pneumonia. He was beginning to feel a little like Job.

As high school begins, Gownley faces new challenges and tougher academic assignments, causing him to reevaluate just about everything in his life. After he visits a comic book store for the very first time, he gets the crazy (or dumb, if you believe the title of the book) idea to start creating his own comics. And a lifelong career is born. But not easily, and not without several setbacks.

THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER! is delightfully entertaining and full of real-life challenges that will ring true to almost everyone who’s survived adolescence (and even more so if you also attended Catholic school). This is a warmhearted book that showcases the joys and difficulties of starting over…whether it’s with a new school, a new ambition, a new girlfriend, or a whole new life.
