The Magic Misfits

Written by Neil Patrick Harris with illustrations by Lissy Marlin

Acclaimed actor (and magician) Neil Patrick Harris makes his middle-grade debut with THE MAGIC MISFITS. Fans of the star will already know that Harris is a practiced magician, so it should come as no surprise that his book blends magic, fantasy and some good old-fashioned sleight of hand for a heartwarming adventure that is both fun and funny.

Aspiring magician Carter is an orphan being cared for by his nefarious “uncle,” but one day, he realizes he can no longer tolerate his uncle abusing his sleight of hand talents for evil --- stealing from others, manipulating them and swindling. When Carter runs away, he soon encounters B.B. Bosso and his crew of crooked carnies who arrive in small towns to steal anything and everything they can get their sticky fingers on.

"Carter is a fantastic hero for young readers....The story overall is fast-paced and very humorous...."

Soon, Carter teams up with other like-minded magicians to help save the town of Mineral Wells from Bosso and his crew. These magic misfits band together to discover not only a way to help the town, but their own powers and abilities.

Carter is a fantastic hero for young readers. He is honest and kind, but still playful and keen. Young readers will enjoy watching him delight other characters with his magic and will be touched by his desire for a real, honest family.

The story overall is fast-paced and very humorous, though it does skew a bit on the younger side of middle-grade. That said, older readers will instantly recognize Neil Patrick Harris’s voice and will have fun picturing him as the narrator. In other words, this is a book for readers of all ages!

Perhaps my favorite part of THE MAGIC MISFITS is Harris’s quick and helpful definitions of bigger, lesser-known words. Rather than interrupting the narrative, these brief asides keep everything flowing and will really help young readers expand their vocabularies.
