The Twistrose Key

With blood on her thorns she must creep through the wall. When the last hope is lost, a Twistrose is called.

They say you never forget a childhood pet. Long after you’ve buried them in the yard underneath the rose bushes, they visit you in dreams and happy memories. Only in your wildest imagination do they continue to live on, perfectly content, in some other world where they, too, haven’t forgotten about you. Eleven-year-old Lin Rosenquist wondered if all this was true after she buried her pet rat, Rufus, and thought she would never see him again. She certainly didn’t expect Rufus to be connected at all to the mysterious parcel that arrived at her home with an old, ornate-looking key and a single word on a piece of paper: Twistrose.

Lin soon discovers that the key unlocks a door in the cellar of her old house, which leads to a magical land called Sylver.  Cast in eternal winter, Sylver is a small city that is home to former pets that were once strongly connected to their owners. The pets carry themselves like people in both what they wear and how they act, and they are divided into different clans of Petlings, including Rodents, Felines and Canines.

If you love THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE or THE GOLDEN COMPASS, then you will most certainly enjoy THE TWISTROSE KEY.

Upon arrival, Lin is overjoyed to be reunited with Rufus and hopes they can explore the great city together, but Rufus informs Lin that she hasn’t come just for fun --- Sylver and all the Petlings are in great danger, and only Lin can save them!

Lin soon learns that she is a Twistrose, and that Twistroses are only called to Sylver in moments of great danger. Apparently, the time has come in Sylver where mysterious creatures known as Winterfyrsts use their magic to bring forth a great snowfall --- the Wandersnow --- that blankets all the lands of the world. The only problem is that the last Winterfyrst in existence, Isvan Winterfyrst, has gone missing, and it’s up to Lin to find him. Without Ivan, the gate between Sylver and Earth --- the Wandergate --- cannot be opened, which would not only mean the end of Sylver, but also no way back home for Lin.

Finding Ivan Winterfyrst proves much more difficult than Lin could have imagined, and she and Rufus embark on an adventure that will span the entire Sylver Valley. This adventure, as they say, is where the magic truly begins. As Lin and Rufus uncover more and more clues to Ivan’s disappearance, a mysterious and dangerous force threatens to stop them in their tracks at every twist and turn. There is only so much magic to go around, and even Twistroses sometimes fail.

If you love THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE or THE GOLDEN COMPASS, then you will most certainly enjoy THE TWISTROSE KEY. It’s got all of the same elements of these beloved classics, but also has its own unique twists that make it truly original. All the Petlings were a true delight, and anything that has snow trolls has my vote as a must read. THE TWISTROSE KEY arrives just in time for the holidays, so grab a cup of hot chocolate (with marshmallows of course) and enjoy reading a heartfelt story that will warm you to your toes.
